Barbers in Delhi Villages

I’m not quite sure what attracts me so much to streetside barbers. Maybe it’s that they epitomize the lack of division between public and private in urban India – where something as intimate as shaving can be done out in the open for everyone to see. Maybe it’s their simplicity – just a stack of combs and a pair a scissors, a hastily hung mirror and you’re in business. Maybe because they represent the undercurrent of village life that is so present in urban Delhi – that despite fancy malls and high-fi salons, these barbers are still there, ready to trim, cut and shave the drivers, laborers, and domestic help that actual make this city run.
I’m thinking of doing a whole photo essay – Streetside Barbers in Delhi Villages. What do you think?
